I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the Université de Montréal (Montreal, QC, Canada). My areas of specialization are general epistemology, social epistemology, philosophy of medicine, and the philosophy of language.
I hold a doctoral dissertation on the American philosopher Wilfrid Sellars (1912-1989) and remain interested in the history of analytic philosophy.
My recent research in general epistemology focuses on two main areas: the problem of skepticism and hinge-epistemology approaches; and the phenomenon of irrational beliefs (particularly willful blindness).
In social epistemology, I am particularly interested in the normative foundations of categories such as "experiential knowledge" and "lay expertise." In addition to an individual project on the figure of the "expert patient," I am involved in two interdisciplinary research groups. The first, in social sciences, focuses on the experiential knowledge of people living in situations of social exclusion and poverty (in Quebec and Belgium). The second, in clinical research, is conducted at the Montreal Clinical Research Institute and focuses on patient involvement in research and improving care for people living with type 1 diabetes. I am also a member of the Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Commission on Type 1 Diabetes.
In philosophy of medicine, my research focuses on the normativity of diagnosis, with a specific case study of (pre-clinical) diagnostic screening for type 1 diabetes.

Philosophie du diagnostic médical Projet de recherche au Canada / 2025 - 2028
Diagnosis is a crucial moment in medical practice. It constitutes the first response to the request of the patient who, having noted a deterioration in their health status (say, a skin rash), seeks the advice and help of a physician.
An investigation then begins, which first aims to determine what disorder is at hand (allergy? shingles?) and its degree of severity. Depending on the knowledge available on the subject, treatment or management can potentially be considered. Diagnosis thus refers to a reasoning process: based on a certain number of data and clues (patient testimony and history, medical examination, scientific literature, clinical experience), one seeks to identify the disorder and explain why it affects this person. This investigation can be more or less complex and lengthy. It may also fail to reach a conclusion. On the other hand, diagnosis can also refer more specifically to the result or conclusion of this reasoned investigation: it takes the form of a judgment, stated by the physician and shared with the patient, and is generally accompanied by a prognosis as well as a therapeutic offer.
Diagnosis as a reasoning process is a prime object of reflection for the epistemologist: what types of knowledge and cognitive resources does this type of investigation require from the healthcare professional? On what type of data can it be established, according to what methods and on what justifications? Diagnostic investigation likely responds to specific norms that distinguish it from other forms of investigation, but which remain to be clarified: in a word, what is a "good" diagnosis? How does this differ from a "bad" diagnosis, that is, an erroneous diagnosis, but also from underdiagnosis and, conversely, from overdiagnosis? What are the obstacles that can hinder the proper conduct of a diagnostic process, or even make it impossible, and can they be overcome?
As a judgment or statement, diagnosis will be of particular interest to the philosophy of language: among all healthcare professionals, only physicians are authorized to deliver a diagnosis, and only under specific circumstances. A diagnosis can be reassuring (a benign tumor), but it can also be devastating for the patient and their loved ones. This is why it is important not to make mistakes, even though there always remains, in medicine, an irreducible part of uncertainty. The question of what constitutes a "good" diagnosis can therefore be considered from the perspective of speech act theory: what are the felicity conditions of a diagnostic statement? What type of speech act is it and what does it convey (“labelling”, “putting a name on,” verdictive utterance? Through the power of words, a diagnosis can indeed transform an individual into a patient: following screening, for example, one may discover that one is a carrier of a pathology that will only manifest later (for example, Huntington's disease or HIV infection), or at high risk of developing a disease (if, for example, one carries certain genetic mutations strongly associated with the occurrence of several cancers). On the opposite, what happens when no diagnosis can be reached? There are many faces of diagnosis failure, where diagnosis statements and health states do not resonate: diagnosis “mistake”; under-diagnosis; over-diagnosis; diagnosis by exclusion; pseudo-diagnosis.
Like any medical act, diagnosis must first satisfy a fundamental ethical requirement: do no harm. Subsequently, one can hope that it plays a fully therapeutic role. It is to help determine the conditions under which this can be the case that we need a philosophy of diagnosis.
